10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor NOVICE Training Course Details
Who is the 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course for?
The RTITB accredited 10 Day Forklift Instructor Training Course is for experienced forklift operators with no formal experience of instructing others in the use of lifting equipment.
10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Novice Course – Eligibility
The RTITB and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) have set guidance and some eligibility criteria for attending the 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course.
10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course – Eligibility Criteria
Experience Level – This 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course is for experienced forklift operators with no experience of instructing in the use of lifting equipment.
You must have significant experience as a Counterbalance Operator. The RTITB recommend an absolute minimum of 6 months operating experience.
You must have good communication skills and have the confidence to present theoretical and practical lessons to large and small groups of your peers.
Age – To attend this 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course you must be at least 18 years of age.
Language – This 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course has multiple classroom-based theory lessons throughout.
A written theory test is also mandatory.
In addition, the safe use of the Counterbalance Forklift used for training requires that the novice instructor reads and understands any safety signs, local safety notices, and can thoroughly understand the manufacturer’s operator handbook for a Counterbalance Forklift.
The practical training aspect of this 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course, and the mandatory practical test of operating skills, involves the giving and receiving of continuous verbal instructions that the novice instructor must be able to understand and act upon in a safe manner.
Therefore, good comprehension of English language and literacy are important for attending this 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course.
Medical – There is currently no legislation or clear medical guidance available in relation to attending the 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course. In general, we would apply the HSE principle that each person’s fitness for operating the Counterbalance Forklift used for training should be judged individually to ensure that people with disabilities are not disadvantaged but competence in an emergency must always be considered.
We would therefore generally follow the health guidance issued by the DVLA for Group 1 entitlement if the need arises to assess capabilities for attending the 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course.
Essentially, if you are not, or would not be restricted in obtaining a UK driving licence, then there should be no restrictions in operating the Counterbalance Forklift Truck in normal circumstances.
Note – All trainees are required to sign a medical declaration at the beginning of the 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course.
Driving Licence – You do not need a driving licence (car licence) to attend this 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course.

The 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course runs Monday – Friday. It starts at 08:00 per day.
It concludes at approximately 17:00 per day.

Your RTITB Train the Traner (Tutor) will follow recognised training and testing standards specifically devised for the 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course.
Novice forklift instructors will gain an understanding of current relevant legislation, be informed of the very best teaching and operating practices, and be taught the correct methods of instruction techniques.
The 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course Syllabus includes:
- Course Introduction
- Relevant Health and safety regulation
- Approved Code of Practice (ACOP)
- Instructor role and qualities
- Basic principles of instruction
- Skill and task analysis
- Lesson structure (practical)
- Lesson structure (theory)
- Report writing

- Lift truck operator examination
By the end of the 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course, you will:
- Be able to recall and discuss relevant legislation
- Be able to recall and discuss the lift truck operator Code of Practice relating to lift truck operation
- Be able to plan, prepare and deliver lift truck training to the RTITB standard
Candidates must successfully complete an independent examination to register on the RTITB Register of Professional Instructors.
10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course – Tests
To pass the 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course, and receive RTITB accredited Forklift Instructor Registration and Accreditation, the novice forklift instructor must successfully complete the following tests: –
- Basic Operating Skills Test – on a B1 Counterbalance Forklift. This is an Advanced Operational Competence Test. Includes two components: practical skills test (maximum 25 penalty points) and pre-use inspection test.
- Associated Knowledge Test – Must pass a multiple-choice theory paper (pass mark 80%).
- Practical Instructional Ability Test – Deliver a session of no more than 40 minutes in length covering a basic operating skill (pass mark 70 out of a possible 100).
10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course – Qualification
On successful completion of your 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course, you will gain official RTITB Forklift Instructor Registration, which is valid for 5 years. You will receive an RTITB Instructor Certificate and ID card.
The successful outcome of your 10 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Training Course is also registered onto the *RTITB NORS Instructor Registration Database for 5 years, at which point you will be required to attend a 3 or 5 Day RTITB Forklift Instructor Re-Registration Course
You will receive a unique (9-digit) RTITB Forklift Instructor Registration Number.
*Note – The RTITB NORS Database (National Operators Registration Scheme Database) is a secure database of RTITB qualified operators and forklift instructors.
