HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Course Details
Who is the HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Course for?
The RTITB and BRITTOp accredited HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Training Course is designed for those with no, or very limited, experience of using a HIAB (Vehicle Mounted) Hydraulic Lorry Loader.
HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Course – Eligibility
The RTITB, BRITTOp, and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) have set guidance and some eligibility criteria for attending these HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Training Courses.
HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Course – Eligibility Criteria
Experience Level – This HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Course is for those with no, or very limited, experience of using a HIAB Lorry Loader.
Age – To attend this HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Course and operate a HIAB Lorry Loader crane attachment in the workplace you must be at least school leaving age (16). Please note, subject to a risk assessment, if you are under the age of 18 you may need to be supervised in the workplace when using a HIAB Lorry Loader until you reach the age of 18. In addition, no person under the age of 18 can use a HIAB Lorry Loader on docks, or ports.
Language – This HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Course has multiple classroom-based theory lessons throughout. A written theory test is also mandatory. In addition, the safe use of a HIAB Lorry Loader requires that the operator reads and understands any safety signs, local safety notices, and can thoroughly understand the manufacturer’s operator handbook for the HIAB Lorry Loader being used.
The practical training aspect of this HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Course, and the mandatory practical test of operating skills, involves continuous verbal instructions that the trainee must be able to understand and act upon in a safe manner.
Therefore, good comprehension of English language and literacy are important for attending this HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Course.
Note – In extreme cases, an accredited translator can be used for the purposes of testing. The chosen translator must not be a candidate on the HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Course and must not alter the sense of any of the answers given by the candidate. If required, please seek legal advice on the use of an accredited translator.
Medical – There is currently no legislation or clear medical guidance available in relation to the specific use of a HIAB Lorry Loader. In general, we would apply the HSE principle that each person’s fitness for operating a HIAB Lorry Loader should be judged individually to ensure that people with disabilities are not disadvantaged but competence in an emergency must always be considered.
We would therefore generally follow the health guidance issued by the DVSA for Group 1 entitlement if the need arises to assess capabilities for operating a HIAB Lorry Loader.
Essentially, if you are not, or would not be restricted in obtaining a UK driving licence, then there should be no restrictions in operating a HIAB Lorry Loader in normal circumstances.
Note – Individuals who suffer from a fear of heights, vertigo, giddiness or difficulty with balance must not operate a HIAB Vehicle-mounted Hydraulic Lorry Loader. All trainees are required to sign a medical declaration at the beginning of these HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Courses.
Driving Licence – You do not need a driving licence (car/lorry licence) to attend this HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Course, nor do you need a driving licence to operate a HIAB Lorry Loader on business premises or public areas (unless you are the sole driver/HIAB operator of the main vehicle).

There are also 6 safety critical factors that your examiner will be looking for and will halt the test immediately if any of those 6 safety critical factors occur. This would result in a mandatory disqualification and a referral (failed test). A re-test will be required after a period of remedial training.
Note – Your RTITB instructor will identify and explain all potential safety faults throughout the duration of your HIAB Lorry Loader Novice Training Course and will deliver corrective training on each as they occur.

In addition, the safe use of a HIAB Lorry Loader requires that the operator reads and understands any safety signs, local safety notices, and can thoroughly understand the manufacturer’s operator handbook for the HIAB Lorry Loader being used.
The practical training aspect of this HIAB Lorry Loader Experienced Operator Course, and the mandatory practical test of operating skills, involves continuous verbal instructions that the trainee must be able to understand and act upon in a safe manner.
Therefore, good comprehension of English language and literacy are important for attending this HIAB Lorry Loader Experienced Operator Course.
Note – In extreme cases, an accredited translator can be used for the purposes of testing. The chosen translator must not be a candidate on the HIAB Lorry Loader Experienced Operator Course and must not alter the sense of any of the answers given by the candidate.
All trainees are required to sign a medical declaration at the beginning of these HIAB Lorry Loader Experienced Operator Courses.
Driving Licence – You do not need a driving licence (car/lorry licence) to attend this HIAB Lorry Loader Experienced Operator Course, nor do you need a driving licence to operate a HIAB Lorry Loader on business premises or public areas (unless you are the sole driver/HIAB operator of the main vehicle).

A Brief History of HIAB Lorry Loader
Did you know this about the HIAB Lorry Loader?
HIAB Vehicle Mounted Hydraulic Lorry Loader.
HIAB has become a generic name for any vehicle with a mounted crane, boom lift or loader crane, regardless of manufacturer.
Hydrauliska Industri AB (HIAB) is a Swedish manufacturer of loader cranes, demountable container handlers, forestry cranes, truck-mounted forklifts and tail lifts. The company is owned by the Cargotec Corporation.
The name, HIAB, comes from the commonly used abbreviation of Hydrauliska Industri AB, a company founded in Hudiksvall, Sweden 1944 by Eric Sundin, a ski manufacturer who saw a way to utilize a truck’s engine to power loader-cranes through the use of hydraulics.
HIAB invented the world’s first hydraulic truck-mounted crane in 1947. On the other side of the Bothnian Sea in Raisio, Finland about the same time, three brothers, Mikko, Mauno and Martti Terho developed a mechanical cable-operated interchangeable platform-loader (Cablelift) that utilised the truck’s front winch, with which it was possible to use a variety of platform bodies. In 1949 they started Multilift to manufacture their innovative load handling equipment.
The roots of today’s HIAB Company lie in a series of acquisitions from 1977 onwards, when Partek Corporation embarked on a comprehensive diversification and internationalisation strategy. Founded in 1898, Partek Corporation was one of the oldest industrial companies in Finland, originally producing limestone and later a versatile range of materials for the construction industry.
In 1977 Partek decided to expand into the engineering industry and thereby decrease its dependence on domestic construction when it first bought named Multilift. Eight years later, in 1985, the company bought HIAB with its forestry-crane subsidiary Jonsered. In 1988 they bought Loglift – as the name implies, also a forestry crane manufacturer.
During the late 1990s Partek strategically restructured itself into an engineering company, fully divesting its construction-materials activity and making several acquisitions in the load-handling equipment business.
The load-handling side of Partek expanded in 2000 with the acquisition of the Zeteco Group (including among others ZEPRO and WALTCO tail lifts). During the same year the truck-mounted forklift business was acquired, bringing today’s MOFFETT and PRINCETON PIGGY BACK brands into the company.
KONE Corporation acquired Partek in 2002. In 2004 the load-handling functionality was renamed after its most valuable product brand, HIAB. On 1 June 2005 KONE Corporation demerged into new KONE and Cargotec Corporation (listed in Helsinki Stock Exchange). Cargotec consists of HIAB load-handling, Kalmar container-handling and MacGREGOR marine-cargo handling solutions.
